Dont cry for me Argentina
September 2, 2008
I’ve had a very busy day. Started spanish class with Lidia, a wonderful woman from Argentina who speaks very good English, we had 2 hours private session and I learned the difference between estoy and estar. She has a great teaching style and we talked about many things like we were old friends. I start group lessons tomorrow and looking forward to meeting other travelers. My first glimpse of the dirty Rio was from the 11th floor school room. I was just relieved to see some nature. I also took found a couple of rooftops to include trees, bravo. You can barely see the water on the right in the second picture.
For lunch, I enjoyed a typical long drawn out meal starting with tea and 2 hours later finished by asking for la cuerta, the check. This was in the downtown district, so lots of business people and rushing about.
In some small way, I’ve become fond of Argentina and its loud exhaust filled streets filled with smokers everywhere and tons of trash lying about. Many thanks to friends at home who have given me encouragement to keep trying, relax and get over it, basically.
I watched a great movie last night, it fit my mood. Called “in the land of women” with meg ryan and some cute unknown actor i’ve not seen before. it was about love and what we typically think of as love turns out to be nothing more than a fantasy and how and when we really connect to another comes in strange unforeseen ways. it put things in perspective. ever marvel at how the exact right movie, phone call, experience comes to us at the perfect time?
still in search of the perfect boots, there are so many to choose from!!! though being the end of the winter season they are out of many sizes including my own. so still dont own my feets best friend for the next 6 months. though i did buy a pair of shoes today. they will always remind me of argentina for so many reasons. i’ll let you interpret as you like.
Dinner tonight at the pizza house around the corner was fantastico. We drank Stella, its a very common beer here and I personally enjoy so
The mozerella cheese is very fresh so yum.
Oh so they have morning doves here, which is one of my animal totems. These doves find me wherever I am and BA is no different. Though one big difference is the owl like sound they make here is more like a hyenna, higher pitched and slightly painful sounding. I was able to grab my camera one morning in my early morning stupor to take this photo, which looks more like the lochness monster than a dove.
BTW, bear bear or oso oso as my spanish speaking friends know him as, is doing great. He’s been a little under the radar this whole time but seems to be coming out of hibernation as the weather warms up even from last week. Plan on seeing a lot more of him in el futuro.
Plans to visit Patagonia are in the works, as of course Iguazu Falls, perhaps Salta. Then there’s Colonia in Uruguay to the Northeast and Chile to the West. So much to do!
Resting my head tonight with gratitude to be on this crazy trip of a lifetime and grateful to have such amazing friends. Needless to say, I wish you were here. Besos.
